The newest member of the Lexus line-up is the first vehicle built from the automaker’s Global Architecture Compact (GA-C) platform. UX (a play on the words “urban” and “crossover”) proved to be a smooth riding compact crossover utility vehicle during a week-long test drive of the F-Sport version. The 103.9-inch wheelbase UX 200 F-Sport features sport suspension tuning, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with second-generation run-flat/all-season tires, steering wheel paddle shifters, and aluminum foot pedals. Front wheel drive F-Sport also adds audio allure via Active Sound Control, which mimics a “shift change” sound on the gear-less transmission.

Powering the UX is 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that produces 169 horsepower at 6600 rpm and 151 lbs-ft of torque at 4800 rpm. The engine mates to a new 10-speed Direct-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission. The UX has a segment-leading 34-foot curb-to-curb turning diameter. Front occupants have 42.1 inches of legroom, while rear seat riders have 33.1 inches of legroom. With the 60/40-split folding rear seat upright, the cargo space tallies 21.7 cubic feet. Infotainment controls are via the Lexus Remote Touch Interface (RTI), essentially a center console touchpad. Expect plenty of miscues as the RTI requires patience to master its usage. The tested 2019 Lexus UX 200 F Sport collects estimated mpg of 29 city/37 highway and carries a base MSRP of $34,000.
