A week-long test drive of the Cadillac XT4 shows that this all-new compact utility vehicle doesn’t feel small or underpowered. The peppy, roomy 109.4-inch wheelbase XT4 has nearly as much legroom in the rear (39.5 inches) as the front (40.4 inches). The XT4 also underscores cargo space with 22.5 cubic feet with rear seat upright and 48.9 cubic feet with rear seat folded. XT4 boosts a few milestones, like Cadillac’s first vehicle with electro-hydraulic brake assist, and the first Cadillac to integrate Near-Field Communication to help with cellphone-to-vehicle pairing. The utility vehicle is available in three trims: Luxury, Sport, and Premium Luxury.

Powering the tested XT4 Sport with all wheel drive is a 2.0-liter, twin-scroll turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that produces 237 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 258 lbs-ft of torque from 1500-4000 rpm. The lone engine offering mates to a Hydra-Matic 9-speed automatic transmission. Standard fare includes LED headlamps and tail-lamps, high-definition rear camera and rear park assist, and an 8-inch diagonal color touchscreen. The XT4 features a 3-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and that chubby size helps make a long commute a bit less fatiguing for the driver’s hands. Tested 2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport AWD collects estimated mpg of 22 city/29 highway and carries a base MSRP of $41,795.
