The redesigned Hyundai Elantra has power, comfort, and an eco-friendly attitude via SoyFoamTM seats. A week-long test drive underscored this midsize car’s completeness. And with a starting price around $17,000 and a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, the Elantra also lures budget-minded shoppers. The 2017 Elantra gains an inch in width (70.9 inches versus the 2016 model’s 69.9 inches) while stretching out slightly in overall length (from 179.1 inches to 179.9 inches). With 53% advanced high strength steel (versus the prior model’s 21%), the 2017 chassis’ stiffer torsional rigidity means improved ride and handling.
The test driven Elantra Limited was powered by the all-new 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine that produces 147 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 132 pounds-feet of torque at 4500 rpm. (All-new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is also available.) The 2.0-liter engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a next-generation 6-speed automatic transmission. The test driven front wheel drive/106.3-inch wheelbase Elantra Limited with 2.0-liter engine collects estimated mpg of 28 city/37 highway and has a base MSRP of $22,350.
