More power with better fuel economy is the underlying theme for the Mercury Mariner SUV. Gone is the 2.3-liter 4-cylinder that was offered in 2008. For 2009, the Mariner gets a new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 171 horsepower, versus the 153 horsepower of the previous 2.3-liter 4-cylidner. The optional engine choice remains a 3.0-liter V6, but with a whopping 40 horsepower gain (now 240 horsepower) from 2008. A 10.3:1 compression ratio as well as new cylinder heads, fuel injectors, pistons, intake and exhaust cams, and exhaust manifolds underscore the new V6 that mates to a new 6-speed automatic transmission rather than the 4-speed automatic transmission used in 2008. Mariner’s suspension gets a new 18.5 mm stabilizer bar and revised shock absorber tuning, which along with a re-tuned steering system effectively make the SUV an even better road-hugging addict.

Mariner rides on different tires for 2009, and those new 16-inch Michelin Latitude Tour low-rolling resistance tires help boost the fuel performance in 2009 by an estimated one mpg in both city and highway fuel economy. The 2009 Mariner is absolutely spot-on with its offerings (including standards like Sync voice activation, four-wheel independent suspension, and a cap-less fuel fill system on the Premier 4WD). Mariner also presents a pleasing interior environment that spotlights comfort and ease-of-use with the various controls and storage spots. MSRP of Mariner Premier 4WD is $26,790. Estimated mpg fuel economy for the V6 powered SUV is 17 city/24 highway.
