The xA’s replacement is the xD, a subcompact that appropriately fits the funky mode that’s been etched out by Scion. Exterior-wise, the xD is a semi-stout, thick-bodied vehicle. xD’s interior is practical yet atypical. A single circular gauge houses the speedometer and rpm score, but the solid chunk of color used to separate the speedometer from the rpm drops a dork-mark to the overall cabin’s cool-factor. The different textures and patterns throughout the interior are very pleasing. xD’s 60/40 fold-flat rear seat can be reclined up to 10 degrees, and it can be set in five different positions. Storage freaks will like all the stow spots, including the small box in front of the gear shifter.

Powering the four-door xD is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces 128 horsepower. It’s mated to either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission. Standard features include a 160-watt Pioneer audio system that includes an iPod connectivity slot and a mini-jack port under the heating and air conditioning control panel. Other standard staples: a first aid kit (packaged within the owner’s manual zippered cover), cruise control, sport-tuned independent MacPherson strut in front and torsion beam rear suspension, tilt steering wheel with audio controls, and side mirrors with LED turn indicators. Estimated mpg for xD with five-speed manual transmission is 27 city and 33 highway. MSRP is $14,550.
