For the third-generation Volvo XC70, the wagon changes platforms. Instead of sharing the same base as the Volvo S60, the automaker’s flagship S80’s architecture is now employed. Along with a switch in platform comes a new engine. Replacing the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder turbo-charged engine (producing 208 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 236 pounds-feet of torque between 1500 and 4500 rpm) is a 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder that nets 235 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 236 pounds-feet of torque at 3200 rpm. The 5-speed Geartronic automatic transmission is gone, replaced by a 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The new XC70 also has a stronger side structure (which debuted on the 2007 S80), a next-generation Whiplash Protection System for driver and front passenger, and loads of other relevant features.

The 8.3-inch ground clearance XC70 is fitted with a standard all-wheel-drive system that provides instant traction. A wide assortment of optional equipment is offered. The high-tech enhancements include a power tailgate, adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support, and a blind spot information system. XC70’s space chart means 33.3 cubic feet with seats up and a whopping 72.1 cubic feet with the rear 40/20/40 split-fold seat down. It’s a breeze to load things into the vehicle. The tailgate opening is splendid, even incorporating the taillights into the open-wide entry path. XC70 tallies estimated mpg of 15 city/22 highway. The MSRP of Volvo XC70 is $36,775.
