As the first front wheel drive Jeep with fully independent suspension, the Compass does offer full-time active 4WD. (The all-wheel-drive features a lockable center coupling.) Compass is really a Jeep meant for on-the-roadway travel, but it is off-road worthy – providing more than 8 inches of ground clearance. Introduced as an all-new vehicle in the 2007 model year, the Compass tweaks the presentation just a bit in the 2008 model year. The new for 2008 features include making air conditioning standard fare, adding chrome on the lock knobs/interior door handles and radio knob accent rings, revising engine and transaxle calibrations, and upgrading the various package offerings.

Compass Sport and Limited are fitted with a standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, 172 horsepower engine. (The other engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces 158 horsepower.) With front passenger seat folded flat and the rear seat folded flat, Compass provides more than 60 cubic feet of cargo space. The standard fare list includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic roll mitigation technology. Jeep Compass has a fairly non-descript interior, but that’s perfectly appropriate for a Jeep. Put another way, the interior is uncluttered and very practical. For instance, the sturdy-but-not-too-heavy cargo load floor can be removed and washed. Compass Sport 4x4 with 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and 5-speed manual transmission tallies per gallon mileage of 22 city and 27 highway and carries a MSRP of $18,225.
