The four-door sports sedan registers just a few changes for the 2006 model year, including a factory installed satellite radio (XM or Sirius), an available Bluetooth hands-free phone system, an optional tilt-down outside mirror that automatically engages when transmission is in reverse gear, and illuminated steering wheel switches. Nissan Maxima is an engaging vehicle. The interior offers an appealing 3-gauge scooped hood, and an indented navigation screen that makes for easier map reads. Maxima’s design emphasizes functionality without deleting style. But more importantly, the sedan has very comfortable seats. The 3.5 SE Maxima model is powered by a 3.5-liter, DOHC, 24-valve V6 that produces 265 horsepower and 255 pounds-feet of torque. Standard transmission is a 5-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission is optional.

Standard fare on the Maxima 3.5 SE includes 18-inch/6-spoke alloy wheels, a glass paneled roof for front and rear passengers (a power glass sunroof is a $900 option), 8-way power driver’s seat, speed sensitive variable windshield wipers, front active head restraints, fog and cornering lights, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and sport-tuned suspension. The flagship Maxima can be fitted with a $3,650 Driver Preferred Package that includes a rear spoiler, Xenon headlights, and an automatic entry/exit system that tilts up the steering wheel when door handle is engaged. Maxima gains per gallon estimates of 20 city/28 highway. MSRP is $27,750.
