Using a new frame – the same tube-through-tube design of the F-Series pick-up truck – the latest Explorer also improves the independent rear suspension (now with trailing arms) and the front suspension (with stronger components). Standard engine is a 4.0-liter, SOHC V6. The V6 employs a new camshaft and spark plugs. A change in engine calibrations and emission controls help trim emissions by 74 percent compared to the previous V6. Explorer’s optional engine is a new 4.6-liter, SOHC, three-valve V8, which replaces a two-valve V8. The three-valve V8 shares cylinder heads and variable cam timing with the Mustang GT’s engine. New V8 mates to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity for the V8 is 7,300 pounds.

Explorer’s new interior (including a third row bench seat height raised by 1.75 inches) puts an spotlight on noise taming and vibration reduction. A console-mounted shifter, representing a first for an Explorer, is among the most noticeable cabin changes. The SUV also meets federal front and side impact requirements through 2010. New safety features on the Explorer include driver and front passenger side airbags. Standard equipment includes 17-inch painted aluminum wheels; message center with compass, temperature and trip record; front fog lamps; and child seat tether anchor. The 4WD Explorer with V8 engine has per gallon numbers of 14 city/20 highway. MSRP is $33,625.
