For 2003, Chevy Silverado offers a $5,010 Duramax diesel V8 engine mated to a $1,200 Allison five-speed automatic transmission. Although not a punch and go 2500 Series/3-4-ton vehicle when equipped with the diesel, the engine serves as a good match for a full-size truck capable of towing 12,000 pounds (Heavy-duty trucks come with a standard towing/handling package.) The engine releases 300 horsepower at 3100 rpm and 520 pounds-feet torque at 1800 rpm. The body-on-frame Silverado provides a towering road view once you’re in the vehicle. But getting into the truck is a task since it lacks a grab handle for the driver. (The steering wheel shouldn’t be the first choice option.)

Silverado showcases an inviting, low-key interior. The LT version décor includes an Onstar communications system (providing push-button access to a person who can handle service-orientated requests as well as emergency assistance coordination), AM/FM/stereo with six-disc CD changer and Bose speaker system, leather wrapped steering wheel, rearview mirror with integrated digital outside temperature and compass readings, and redundant steering wheel-located controls. The four-wheel-drive Silverado is offered in a number of configurations, including an extended cab. Suggested base price of the 2500 Series Silverado LT is $36,490.
