The Focus ZX5 employs a spirited 130 horsepower Zetec inline 4-cylinder engine (which acquires a new throttle body and new cylinder head for 2003) to power a smartly dressed interior that includes a standard MP3 player. Although classified as a small car, the Focus ZX5 is an agile front wheel drive five-door. It’s also a deceptively roomy vehicle as evidenced when the 60/40 split rear seats are folded down to present a space large enough to accommodate a boxed kitchen appliance. Cargo also doesn’t get tangled in seatbelt harnesses. (For a flat load floor, simply flip-up the seat bottom.)

Focus ZX5’s six dashboard-located vents provide good air distribution. The interior isn’t a clunky, chunky maze of buttons and dials. In contrast to a mishmash of controls, the placements make sense – like locating the side mirror adjustment on the A pillar rather than the center console or the door panel. ZX5 is available in three trims for the 2003 model year, and the option list now includes heated mirrors/front seats. The ZX5, which debuted in 2002, is quieter in 2003 thanks to a number of treatments (including a new underbody deadener) that take the cabin noise down about 2 decibels. Focus ZX5 – which included a $1,625 AdvanceTrac electronic stability system – was priced at $19,495.
