Volvo’s flagship sedan, the S80, advances the luxury meter in 2007 with the all-new, second-generation presentation. The 4-door remains a stellar offering, just more so now that the S80 sedan has a more rigid, energy crash absorbing structure – comprised of four different steel grades – and more gallop. Versus the 5-cylinder it replaces, the new inline 6-cylinder gains 27 horsepower. Although the new 3.2-liter V6 provides ample power, the accelerator on the test vehicle occasionally offered up some unwanted vibrations to the foot. Other than that, the S80 was a master at eliciting glowing comments, most notably from front and rear seat passengers chatting about the comfortable ride.

Among the new optional offerings on the S80 is Volvo’s Blind Spot Information System – which utilizes cameras near the outside mirrors – as well as adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support, marking a first for a Volvo vehicle application. The front wheel drive Volvo S80 has a myriad of standard fare, including a tire pressure monitoring system, front fog lights, and automatic dimming rearview mirror – which are all new for 2007. Volvo’s S80 with V6 and 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission gets mile per gallon counts of 19 city and 28 highway. The MSRP of the S80 is $38,705.
