The name is familiar, but everything else has changed. Mitsubishi Montero for 2001 has a unibody structure (gone is the body-on-frame design), fully independent front double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension (gone is the solid rear axle), rack and pinion steering (gone is the recirculating ball design), and new computer controls on the four-speed transmission. Montero Limited is equipped with a five-speed Sportronic Sequential Shift automatic transmission that permits clutch-less manual gear changes. The Limited version is equipped with ActiveTrac 4WD system, which enables switching from 2WD to 4WD to All Wheel Drive via a center console located gear shifter.

There’s now more shoulder room for third row seat passengers. (Third row seat can be removed or stowed to provide a flat floor.) Montero designers paid attention to the needs of passengers. Riders will find 10 assist grips, front and rear reading lights, 6 cupholders, and a removable toolbox. The vehicle presents a great road view (no annoying pillar obstructions), side mirrors that are right-sized, plenty of storage zones, and three power outlets (instrument panel, center console, and rear cargo area). Montero Limited sports a LCD information center for compass, outside temperature, miles-to-empty, date/time, but sun glare makes it difficult to read in the daytime. Miles per gallon estimates for the Mitsubishi Montero Limited are 13 city/18 highway. MSRP of Montero Limited is $35,497.
