Second-generation Hyundai Kona debuts with the 2024 model. The utility vehicle gets stretched in length (now 171.3 inches), nearly 6 inches longer than the prior model. Its width (now 71.9 inches) increases by an inch, while the vehicle’s 104.7-inch wheelbase expands by more than 2 inches. A week-long test drive emphasized the benefits of the larger dimensions. Rear seat riders gained legroom (36.4 inches versus prior 35.2 inches), and the cargo space increased to 25.5 cubic feet with rear seat upright (versus prior 19.2 cubic feet) and 63.7 cubic feet with rear seat folded (versus prior 45.8 cubic feet).

The tested Kona Limited AWD was powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that produces 190 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 195 lb-ft torque from 1700-4500 rpm. Engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission. (The base engine is a 2.0-liter Atkinson 4-cylinder releasing 147 horsepower and 132 torque and mates to an intelligent variable transmission.) Interior highlights include dual 12.3-inch panoramic display screens and a next-generation infotainment system. The tested Hyundai Kona Limited AWD has a base MSRP of $33,300 and carries estimated MPG of 24 city and 29 highway.
