In its third-generation interpretation, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV is a brawny powerhouse, emphasized during a week-long test drive. The parallel hybrid system with an electric motor/generator positioned between the engine and transmission is a showcase of on-demand acceleration. Sequoia’s prior 5.7-liter i-Force V8 provided 381 horsepower, but the 2023 model’s twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 hybrid i-Force Max significantly amps up the power quotient. Other notable changes for the 3-row vehicle include a new rack-mounted electronic power steering system, a more rigid frame to improve the ride, and 9,000-plus pounds of maximum towing capacity versus the prior 7,400-lbs maximum.

The twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine (which debuted in the full-size Tundra pickup truck) provides 437 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 583 lb-ft of torque at 2400 rpm. Engine mates to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Sequoia employs an independent double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. The SUV is offered in five trims: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone. Cargo space ranges from 11.5 to 22.3 cubic feet behind the third row; 49 cubic feet behind the second row, and 86.9 cubic feet behind the first row. (Total cargo volume for 2022 Sequoia was approximately 120 cubic feet.) The tested 122-inch wheelbase Sequoia Capstone collected mpg of 19 city/22 highway with a base MSRP of $78,300.
