Driving dynamics are rock-solid with the second-generation BMW X4 sports activity coupe. Its pristine steering, on-demand acceleration and stopping power enhance X4’s road-hugging nature. The 2019 vehicle is 1.4 inches wider and has a lower center of gravity vs the prior model. There’s a greater use of high and ultra-high strength steels, and aluminum in the chassis and body. The latest generation X4 grabs a segment-leading 0.30 Cd (drag coefficient), an approximate 10% drop from the previous model. During a week of driving, the tested 2019 BMW X4 xDrive30i showed how weight loss and sharper aerodynamic styling and aero- underbody treatments have paid-off in performance spades.
X4 30i is powered by a 2.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 248 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque between 1450 and 4800 rpm. The engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission that enables manual gear selection via steering wheel mounted paddles. xDrive intelligent all wheel drive is standard, and nicely compliments the vehicle’s 8 inches of ground clearance, and the 25.7 degree approach angle/22.6 degree departure angle. New for 2019 features include a panoramic moonroof and 3-zone climate control. The tested 112.7-inch wheelbase BMW X4 xDrive30i carries a base MSRP of $50,450 and collects estimated mpg of 22 city/29 highway. (BMW’s sports activity coupe is also available in a performance model, the X4 M40i.)
