This test driver got a big jolt of fun driving the Bolt EV. As a newcomer in the 2017 model year, the Bolt EV immediately became Chevrolet’s showpiece for a long-range electric car without a big “gotcha” MSRP. During a weeklong test drive, the 102.4-inch wheelbase Bolt EV showcased zesty acceleration and solid handling. The car didn’t disappoint during a mix of driving scenarios, including stop-and-go travel on city streets, hilly roads, and wide-open expressway cruising. A 10.2-inch color touchscreen can provide the driver and front passenger with a quick glimpse of energy flow, regenerative braking, and other vital real-time status reports.
The Bolt EV uses a high-capacity electric motor capable of producing 200 horsepower and up to 266 pounds-feet of torque. A 60 kWh lithium-ion battery pack can be re-charged via 120 volt, 240 volt, or an available DC fast-charging system. (Fast-charging provides up to 90 miles in 30 minutes, while a 120-volt charge takes about an hour to add 4 miles to the driving range.) The front wheel drive Bolt EV is surprisingly roomy for a small wagon. Maximum cargo space is 56.6 cubic feet with 16.9 cubic feet behind the 60/40 split back seat. The test driven 2018 Bolt EV Premier has a MSRP of $40,905. Bolt EV’s EPA estimated range is 238 miles.
