The new-for-2015 features on the VW Jetta include an array of driver assist systems (blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, park distance control, and forward collision warning) and a more powerful diesel engine. VW’s best-selling sedan also underwent a cosmetic refreshing in the front and rear. The takeaway after a one-week test drive, the Jetta got it right . . . again. The driver assist systems are truly helpful. During expressway driving, the blind spot alert is akin to having a backseat driver with a mission. This assist appears as a flashing icon in the appropriate side mirror whenever another vehicle is radar-detected in the blind spot.

Jetta’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine produces 150 horsepower between 3500 and 4000 rpm, and 236 pounds-feet of torque from 1750 rpm to 3000 rpm. Compared to the outgoing diesel engine (EA189), the new diesel engine (EA288) releases 10 more horsepower. (Jetta can be fitted with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Jetta Hybrid is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder paired with a 20kW electric motor.) The 104.4-inch wheelbase sedan keeps rear seat riders comfortable with more than 38 inches of legroom. Front wheel drive Jetta SEL with diesel engine and 6-speed manual transmission has an MSRP of $26,410 and collects estimated mpg of 31 city/46 highway.
