The previous generation Passat carried a heavy starting price ($26,995). But so much has changed with the all-new 2012 Volkswagen Passat, including a lower base price ($19,995). Passat is a larger car now—sporting a 110.4-inch wheelbase versus the prior 106.7 inches.  Backseat riders really notice the makeover, especially with more than 39 inches of rear legroom versus the previous 37.7 inches. Even though the midsize sedan segment is highly competitive, the new Passat merits a spot alongside the best. Passat’s electric power steering is exceedingly responsive. The ride is pristine. There are no sidesteps when cornering or rocky rolls when the car encounters pothole-filled roadways. The common sense interior layout isn’t bogged down by excessive buttons and gadgets. And, the seats are firm and comfortable.

Passat is offered with three engine choices: 2.5-liter 5-cylinder gasoline, 3.6-liter V6 gasoline, or 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel. The test driven Passat, powered by the 280 horsepower/265 lbs-ft torque V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, was lively and provided spot-on acceleration during passing maneuvers. While the former Passat had 14.2 cubic feet of trunk room, the new sedan provides 15.9 cubic feet of trunk space. Passat V6 SEL Premium catches estimated mpg fuel economy of 20 city/28 highway. A Fender premium audio system, leather trimmed sport seats, front fog lights as well as keyless entry with push button and remote start highlight the SEL Premium’s standard fare appointments. MSRP for Passat V6 SEL Premium is $32,950.
