As an overall package, the all-new Volvo S60 T6 AWD is an attractive offering. The sport factor begins with the start/stop dash-located button although the driver must first insert the keyfob into a slot, depress the brake, then push the start button. Standard engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder that provides 300 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque starting at 2100 rpm and continuing through the rev range. (It’s relevant to point out that the 4.4-liter V8 engine used in other Volvo vehicles has the same torque output.) Standard transmission is a 6-speed automatic that also permits manual shifts. Another standard equipment feature is the electronically controlled all wheel drive with Instant Traction for upgraded response on wet and dry roads.
Pedestrian Detection marks its global debut on the S60. The system uses radar and camera-based technologies to detect pedestrians in front of the car, warn the driver, and automatically apply full braking power if the driver fails to do so. Volvo officials claim the system can avoid a pedestrian accident if the car is traveling up to 22 mph. Pedestrian Detection is offered as part of the optional $2,100 Technology Package that includes other features, like lane departure warning and distance alert. A one-week test drive of the S60 showed the car to be above average on ride/handling, acceleration, and braking. A standard multi-media system includes Bluetooth hands-free phone interface, CD/DVD player, HD radio, AUX and USB inputs, and MP3 capability. The S60 T6 AWD collects estimated mpg of 18 city/26 highway and carries a MSRP of $37,700.
