As the first crossover vehicle from Saab, the 9-4X is a worthy contender in the mid-size luxury segment. While sharing the same underbody and interfaces as the Cadillac SRX, the 9-4X has unique body panels and its own driving characteristics. The uplevel 9-4X Aero features a spitfire personality and a turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 producing 300 horsepower. It’s the same engine that’s used in the Saab 9-5 sedan. (Base 9-4X is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter V6.) Saab Aero’s DriveSense tames tangled roadways. This adaptive chassis control lets the driver choose between comfort, sport, and eco settings.
The vehicle’s 63.9-inch front and rear tracks, stiff structure (31 Hz torsional rigidity) and suspension (highlighted by an independent, linked H-arm rear layout) serve as the foundation for nimble-minded handling. Interior-wise, the ultra-quiet 9-4X puts all the driver’s controls within easy reach. Design cueslike joystick air vent adjusters and floor console ignition (now a start-stop pushbutton) underscore the ‘Saab-flavor’. There’s no shortage of room for hauling, either. With rear seatback in the upright position, 17.1 cubic feet of space is provided. The all-wheel drive version of the 9-4X has estimated mpg of 15 city/22 highway. Saab 9-4X Aero MSRP is $48,010 while the 9-4X starts at $33,380.
