This is far from a cheap vehicle, and the high-cost has everything to do with the name Cadillac and the technology that makes the new Escalade Hybrid the world’s first large luxury SUV. General Motors’ patented two-mode hybrid system means the vehicle can launch and travel in low speeds in electric-only mode. When more acceleration power is demanded, the Escalade Hybrid seamlessly blends in the 6.0-liter gasoline V8 engine that produces 332 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 367 pounds-feet of torque at 4100 rpm. The hybrid system uses a 300-volt nickel metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS) and an advanced electrically variable transmission. The vehicle also benefits from GM’s Active Fuel Management (which shuts off 4 of the engine’s 8 cylinders during highway cruising and other instances of low power/acceleration needs), and late intake valve closing technology.

The Escalade Hybrid, like its non-hybrid counterpart, is a massive but nimble handling vehicle. None of the bells and whistles are sacrificed on the Escalade Hybrid, so perks like 14-way power front seats with heated and cooled cushions and backrests, power fold side mirrors, and side blind spot alerts are among the many, many standard fare items. The $1,095 optional power retractable running boards are great for people wanting a step-assist in/out of the vehicle. But be advised: remind riders about the boards to help prevent passengers from getting unwanted knocks to the shins. The 4WD hybrid Escalade carries a MSRP of $73,235 and estimated per gallon fuel economy of 20 city and 21 highway. (The 2WD and AWD non-hybrid Escalade has estimated per gallon fuel economy of 12 city and 19 highway.)
