When the Scion xB hit the market in the 2004 model year, the boxy vehicle had a very distinctive look. The next-generation xB tosses out the tall box profile in favor of a more squat-like appearance. And as a completely re-done xB, it’s bigger, gaining four inches in the wheelbase, an extra 12 inches in the length, and nearly 3 inches in the width. The great ride of the first-generation xB is even better now, thanks in part to the larger wheelbase and standard 16-inch wheels (replacing 15 inch wheels). xB is a kick to drive, and the larger brakes mean a road-roaring scramble can be halted in quick fashion. Among the highlights on the new xB: tinted rear windows, turn signals integrated into the side mirrors, an upgraded audio system, and a more powerful engine.

Scion xB drops the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine in favor of a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 158 horsepower (a more than 50 horsepower increase) and 162 pounds-feet of peak torque. xB is a dreamscape of space with 21.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats. (The 60/40 split fold second row seats can be folded flat.) There’s a concealed tray beneath the rear seats in addition to other storage zones. The standard Pioneer audio system – including iPod connectivity – has a 160-watt output, while the optional audio system means images, 4-second video clips, and 8-second movies can be downloaded from Pioneer’s website onto the head unit’s screen. Scion offers either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting. MPG (with either transmission) is estimated at 22 city/28 highway. MSRP is $16,600.
