A nice riding vehicle does indeed make a long road trip an easy endurance test. And on a trek from Detroit to Cincinnati, the all-new 2007 Mazda CX-7 provided exceptionally good interior comfort for four adults. CX-7 crosses the boundary of staid SUV-like design with an appealing blend of sports car enthusiasm and SUV functionality. For the driver, the 66-degree angled windshield serves as a useful scanning outpost. The engine is a spring-well of power, producing 244 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 258 pounds-feet of torque at 2500 rpm. Borrowed from the MazdaSpeed 6 sports sedan, the 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is not an exact repeat of that car’s engine. For one thing, the CX-7’s engine features a new turbocharger. The 4-cylinder matches to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The CX-7’s cargo floor is about 70 inches long (39 inches if rear seat is in upright position) and has a lip to halt the forward movement of gear/luggage/boxes. Another nice trunk treat is that the flooring is reversible, plastic on one side and carpeting on the other side. The vehicle – fitted with 6 standard airbags – is available in front wheel drive or active torque split all wheel drive. A non-typical key – actually it’s more like a credit card, but thicker – contains buttons for locking/unlocking the doors. There isn’t an ignition key slot, and as long as the key card is on-person or in-vehicle, the CX-7 engine starts and stops via turning a dial. MSRP of the CX-7 Grand Touring AWD vehicle is $32,005.
