Some people prefer the good news/bad news approach to information. For those two-sided information types, here’s the bad news: There is no 2007 model year Lancer Evolution MR. Here’s the good news: The 2006 model year vehicle rates as one of the very best high-throttle, road-hugging, power-screaming automobiles available. For one thing, the 6-speed manual transmission is a blast, in part because the gear tosses are quick. (Attribute that to the gearbox’s Teflon-lined shift control cables.) The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder – at first read – might seem like an odd choice for a performance car, but the intercooled/turbocharged engine nails 286 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 289 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm.

The Lancer Evolution MR sports an aluminum roof, front fenders, and hood with heat vent. There’s also a 7-inch wide carbon fiber rear spoiler positioned 10 inches above the trunk lid. Just as the material choices play into this being one heck of a quick 4-door, the Evolution MR also has Yokohama performance tires and forged 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the car has Recaro front bucket seats, aluminum pedals, a center-located tachometer, and a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheels as part of the made-from-muscle styling cues. Now for some more good news: the 10th generation Lancer Evolution MR will be available in January 2008 as a 2008 model year vehicle. In the meantime, the 2006 Evolution MR – with mpg of 18 city/24 highway – carries a MSRP of $35,189.
