The Dodge Neon is a standout vehicle, but the SRT-4 – the high performance version of the Neon – puts the sport in the compact car. First off, the power is so fun, especially hitting 85 mph in third gear. The seats have bolsters that keep the driver snug during cornering, and driving through the tight turns is extra fun because you’re pressing down a clutch positioned at the just the right angle for quick pedal moves. That’s the short take on the SRT-4. But this four-door is loaded with more positive points, not the least of which is an array of race-inspired trimmings – from the shifter knob ball, tail fin and hood scoop to the metal pedals with holes and cool looking rims.

For the 2004 model year, the SRT-4 gains a new engine control module with an altered calibration – that gives the 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder powerplant a widened torque range. The engine stats on the 230 horsepower offering are underscored by 250 pounds-feet of torque from 2200 to 4400 rpm. Also new for ’04 is a standard limited slip differential, BF Goodrich three-season tires, an Electric Blue exterior paint (replacing Solar Yellow), and the optional $695 sunroof package. Mile per gallon estimates on the SRT-4 with 5-speed manual transmission are 22 city/30 highway. MSRP of the SRT-4 is $20,450.
