For 2004, Santa Fe is offered with a 2.4-liter, 138 horsepower 4-cylinder; a 173 horsepower V6; or a 200 horsepower V6. The newest V6 – a 3.5-liter vs. last year’s 2.7-liter – provides power, but its 200 horsepower punch can be a bit overwhelming from a standstill. This driver prefers the acceleration snap in the 40-60 mph range versus the zero to 20 mph range. But having noted that, the new engine does provide this midsize SUV with a performance attitude, something that off-road drivers will appreciate.

Santa Fe is a sturdy 4x4, more so with the addition of a Borg-Warner designed InterActive Torque Management system that shifts power to the front wheels if rear wheels are slipping. When the slip is overcome, rear wheel power is either reduced or eliminated. Santa Fe is a terrific everyday vehicle with easy-to-reach interior controls, comfortable ride, and ample storage space. It’s also styled to provide unobstructed outside views. Standard fare list includes cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, rear window defroster, traction control, and a cargo-stowed first aid kit. Mile per gallon tally on the 4WD is 17 city/21 highway. MSRP is $25,499.
