I’m always asked, “What’s your favorite car?” Each new model year, I have six or so vehicles that top my list, and two or three products that really tower above the competition. For 2004, the Mazda RX-8 tips the scale as my best sports car. RX-8 received an abundance of attention during my one week/1,300-mile test drive. There was seldom a time when someone didn’t roll down a window, waving frantically, to inquire about the car, and I lost count of how many people would interrupt a walk or jog to stop and check out this nifty looker. And why shouldn’t people notice because on style alone, the RX-8 is simply a smashingly sharp stunner.

Drive the car and you’ll agree that the steering is precision perfect, the supportive seats are dreamy comfortable, the site lines are great, the ride is completely enjoyable, the 1.3-liter, 238 horsepower rotary engine provides an irresistible off-the-mark oomph. And the 6-speed manual transmission shifts as easily as a tossed stone causes water to ripple. This car is fantastic. The cabin’s front row is roomy, even for a 6-foot-4 rider, and the back seat can accommodate two adults. RX-8’s standard equipment list wraps up plenty, including 4 cupholders, air conditioning, outside temperature read-out, sport-tuned suspension, and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. When fitted with the 6-speed manual transmission, the car registers fuel per gallon ratings of 18 city/24 highway. MSRP is $26,680.
