After parking the Phaeton, all eyes at a yard sale focused on this all-new VW sedan. I was offered everything spread across the lawn as a trade for “that awesome looking car.” It is an attractive car, especially with the black klavierlack exterior. It is also a very powerful car. Although available in a V8, the W12 engine is a 6.0-liter, 48-valve monster that warps the road with 420 horsepower. High-end touches are plentiful and include 18-way power adjust driver seat with a/c, heat and message feature; heated-leather wrapped steering wheel; 18-inch alloy wheels; and head restraints for all seats (rear seat headrests move upward when a door is opened).

The Phaeton does have a few sore spots, at least for this one week/ 320-mile test driver. For instance, the seats are uncomfortable for people 5-foot-5 inches and shorter (mainly due extra long seat bottoms), dashboard control points are way too confusing, armrests are positioned at an uncomfortable height, and the rear console’s fixed screen is an unattractive space eater. With its 5-speed automatic transmission, the W12 Phaeton scores miles per gallon estimates of 12 city/19 highway. MSRP is $79,900, but the price rapidly escalates with options/packages that range from $500 to $7,650. (NOTE: The W12 sedan carries a $3,000 gas guzzler tax.)
