Grand Marquis is a no-thrills kind of four-door sedan. And after a one-week, 250-mile test drive, the lack of glitz and gadgets was superbly blissful. Here’s one car that proudly shows its hump. That’s the spot where almost every automaker has decided to go glam with a floor mounted center console. In the Grand Marquis, it’s actually possible for three adults to sit in the front bench seat without needing to straddle automotive hardware. For 2004, the car offers a number of new options, including moonroof, laminated security side glass, and heated front seats. One thing that hasn’t changed: the sedan has the government’s highest safety rating at double five stars.

The body-on-frame, rear wheel drive Grand Marquis is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 that produces 224 horsepower and 272 pounds-feet of peak torque. The four-speed automatic transmission with electronic overdrive has its shift spot on the steering wheel. Grand Marquis – the longest-offered, best selling Mercury ever – is a throwback sedan in the best sense. Its performance, hearty handling, interior roominess and gigantic trunk (segment leading at 20.6 cubic feet) make this sedan truly a grand granny. And for those wondering, the sedan doesn’t have a boat-like ride. Suggested retail price is $28,870.
