For value shoppers, Dodge adds the Stratus SXT for 2003. But if power is the dominant factor when evaluating a four-door sedan, the R/T version hits the radar. Stratus R/T produces 200 horsepower with the V6 all-aluminum 2.7-liter engine versus 150 horsepower with the Stratus SXT’s four-cylinder engine. During a 200-mile test drive of the Stratus R/T, the engine performed. But the shifter for the standard 5-speed manual transmission is far from impressive – unless you really like clumsy, clunky shift entrances. R/T’s specially tuned performance suspension equals a stiff, sporty ride – something more akin to sports coupe handling.

Stratus R/T – which sports a trunk-lid spoiler, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and fog-lights – features an interior trimmed for necessity rather than needless extravagance. There’s ample head and legroom for back seat passengers, and the trunk provides a habitat for items ranging from golf clubs to groceries. (One minor annoyance: a cheap fabric covering in the trunk sends an unfinished appearance message.) Standard offerings on the Stratus R/T include rear window defroster, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, front and rear floor mats, and sunvisors with illuminated mirrors. Mileage estimates are 20 city/27 highway. MSRP of the R/T is $21,715.
