Wow. Volvo S40 for 2003 thrills with a superb ride, on-the-dime braking performance, responsive steering, and exquisite power. With a 10 horsepower gain from 2002, the now 170 horsepower, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine truly shines. Any time the driver wants or needs the power, the engine struts its 177 pounds-feet torque – available throughout the 1800 rpm to 5000 rpm range. The 2003 model sports body color side moldings and bumpers, a standard in-dash CD player, new three-spoke steering wheel, and a new four-dial cluster. Beyond the S40’s dull, drab gray interior, there is substance: great positioned controls, comfortable seats, ample storage zones (door bins, seatbacks, front of leather seats), and a gadget-less steering wheel.

S40 provides a roomy trunk and a roomy passenger compartment. The standard fare list is very impressive and includes 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, heated power outside mirrors, cruise control, outside temperature display, five padded head restraints, anti-lock braking system, five speed automatic transmission, and 70/30 split-fold rear seats. Volvo S40 may be unpretentious, but it certainly makes a powerful statement via its overall presentation. Without question, the S40 is driver-magnet. The four-door sedan grabs per gallon fuel economy numbers of 22 city/30 highway. MSRP is $23,900.
