Protege5 draws attention via a racy appeal. With an unconventional approach to a small vehicle, Protege5 conceals its toughness in a structure that has 1.6 mm thick stamped steel reinforcement in the roof and 2.0 mm steel in the floor sills and B pillar. Introduced to the marketplace in the spring of 2001, Protege5 adds a new design for its 16-inch, 5-spoke wheels as well as new front fenders for the 2003 model year. The hatchback’s option list includes 4-speed electronically controlled sport transmission, black on silver gauges, and a 6-disc CD changer.

Powerplant for the hatchback is a 130 horsepower, 16-valve, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. The engine and its companion 5-speed manual transmission are a great one-two punch for on-command performance that doesn’t impede per gallon fuel economy of 25 city/31 highway. The front wheel drive Protege5 includes a full slate of standards such as air conditioning, power windows and locks, power rack and pinion steering, fog lights, and cruise control. Protege5 also comes with 24-hour roadside assistance and a bumper-to-bumper warranty of 48 months/50,000 miles. MSRP is $16,635.
