The 2003 model year drops the Jetta wagon GLX model with VR6 engine, but the GL and GLS versions remain. All engine choices (115 horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder; 90 horsepower 1.9-liter turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder; 180 horsepower 1.8 4-cylinder; and 200 horsepower VR6 6-cylinder) remain intact. For 2003, the Volkswagen Jetta GLS wagon reflects redesigned standard 15-inch alloy wheels as well as a standard power sunroof. The Jetta GL adds a number of standard items to the base list, including heated/power exterior mirrors, power windows, cruise control, and AM/FM/stereo/cassette with CD player.

Jetta wagon carries the load with ample stow space – even where it’s unwanted. (A paper-thin gap in the floor shifter console of a test vehicle allowed a driver’s license to slide deep inside the protective shell.) Although dual, in-dash, pop-out cupholders fit snug to different beverage bottles via a clever ‘hook’ design, the buttons for audio controls are blocked when cupholders are in use. A clever design that really works – a sunglass case – is featured in lieu of a driver grab handle. Jetta wagon achieves miles per gallon estimates of 24 city/30 highway. The vehicle carries a MSRP of $19,590.
