For many reviewers, the Volvo XC90 ranked a good to great score. It is a vehicle loaded with many technology feats – like roll stability control, inflatable side curtain airbag for all three seating rows and integrated child booster seat – that when the XC90 debuted in 2003, ranked as world first applications. As much as the technology achievements are impressive (and worthwhile), there are some aspects about the vehicle that fall short for this reviewer. The third row seat – for whatever reason – was a glitch-fest. Although the third row seat can be folded flat, the driver’s side third row seatback wouldn’t budge. And the ability to access items when the third row seat is in place makes for a cumbersome effort. Third row headrests blocked the driver’s view, and the headrests are not removable. Another dislike zone is the dash-located navigation screen that partially blocks the outside view when in the up/in-use position.

There are a few new appointments for the 2004 model year, including an optional wood steering wheel, optional leather gearshift knob, aluminum dash inlays and altered wheel styles. XC90 is sold in a base version that’s powered by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, and an AWD T6 version that’s powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter inline 6-cylinder engine. Both versions can tow up to 5,000 pounds. XC90 has a relatively wide track at 64.3 inches for the front and 63.9 inches for the rear. The standard list on the AWD R6 version includes tailgate wiper system, integrated front fog lights, tilt and telescopic steering wheel. Estimated per gallon fuel numbers are 15 city/20 highway for AWD T6 version. MSRP of XC 90 AWD T6 is $40,565.
