Pick-up trucks have long functioned as the be-all vehicle for hauling bulky stuff. But remove the truck bed, and there goes the ultimate cargo carrier. GMC’s Sonoma Crew Cab compact pick-up truck provides cargo space (via a 4-foot, 6-inch truck bed with a maximum 1,540-pound payload) and people transportation space. The 4-door vehicle sports front bucket seats and a rear bench seat. It’s a comfortable interior atmosphere with standard air conditioning, stereo with cassette and CD player, and lightly tinted glass on all windows. Sonoma Crew Cab offers 10 exterior paint choices. The standard V6 engine, mating to a 4-speed automatic transmission, provides mpg estimates of 15 city/18 highway.

Four-wheel-drive is available at the press of a button; axles have a final drive ratio of 3.42:1. The vehicle is stuffed with so many touches that the optional appointments are few (3.73:1 axles and rear locking differential, cold climate package, plus tires with white outlined letters). Sonoma uses a special sensor (mounted at the rear of the engine) to correct ignition timing as a means of overcoming noisy engine knock – no matter what fuel grade is pumped into the 18-gallon tank. The body-on-frame Sonoma is also sold in 2-door regular and extended cabs as well as extended cab with two front doors, plus a left rear access gate. MSRP of the Sonoma Crew Cab 4WD is $25,083.
