The S4 manages to arrive under the radar. It doesn’t scream knock-your-socks-off styling, but that bodes well when you’re zipping along on the expressway with the power provided by a 2.7-liter 250 horsepower bi-turbo V6. The rpm curve (258 pounds-feet of torque from 1,850 to 4,500 rpm) means it’s not always necessary to shift through all 6-gears on the manual transmission to reach a desired cruising speed. Xenon headlights illuminate roadways well enough that a driver isn’t uneasy about traveling at night. From a ride and road handling perspective, the Audi S4 makes all the right moves.

S4 presents a subdued interior look, but there are several nice touches provided as standard treatments, including heated driver door lock, lighted glove box/trunk/lighter/ashtray, four assist handles at each door, a pull-down sun visor above rearview mirror, defogging/electronically adjustable side mirrors, fold-down rear seat armrest, and 4-tie down hooks for the trunk’s luggage net. One needed improvement area: driver and front passenger seatbelt buckle locations. The seatbelt connection points are positioned too deep, making the buckle/unbuckle activity a struggle. Audi S4 earns mileage estimates of 17 city/24 highway. Suggested price for the vehicle is $38,900.
