Volkswagen Jetta – sold in GL, GLS, and GLX versions – is the first compact sedan with side curtain protection, providing head area energy absorption for front and rear passengers during a severe side impact. Other new 2001 features include three new exterior paints, altered cupholder design, and new fabrics. Radio station selection and setting vehicle speed becomes less distracting with radio and cruise controls added at the 3 and 9 steering wheel positions; the new button controls are a GLX standard and GLS option. Base engine is a 2.0-liter, 115 horsepower 4-cylinder. Engine choices also cover a turbo diesel and a 174 horsepower 6-cylinder (standard on GLX). Jetta’s fully galvanized body (put together with bonding agents, laser welding, and self-piercing rivets) is backed by a 12-year – the best in the industry – limited corrosion, no mileage restriction warranty.

The GLX Jetta model features 8-way memory-adjusted seats that can be engaged via pressing a button or via remote control unit. Jetta’s firm-toned seats translate to good support for the lower back. A pump-operated handle adjusts front seat heights, so even short-statue people can maneuver an over-the-hood view. Rear seat passenger comfort hasn’t been overlooked either, partially evidenced by three lockable headrests. A carpeted, spacious rear cargo zone provides a power outlet as well as assist grips on the inside lid to make trunk-lid closing less of an arm stretch. Mileage estimates for the 6-cylinder Jetta with 5-speed manual transmission are 19 miles per gallon city/28 mpg highway. MSRP of base Jetta is $16,850, while the top-of-the-line Jetta is $24,450.
