One of the most-appealing aspects of the Chevy Impala is its so unassuming. (Maybe that’s why police departments like it.) The exterior styling isn’t flamboyant. It’s a practical presentation – right down to the ‘notice me’ taillights. After being absent for several years, Impala returned to the Chevrolet line-up last year. For the 2001 model year, there are no major alterations – just three new exterior color choices (light sandrift metallic, white, and medium bronze mist metallic) and the addition of the OnStar safety (roadside assistance, etc.) and information service as a standard push-button feature on the Impala LS – optional on the base model.

Impala offers two different V6 engines, with the stronger version producing 200 horsepower. Engine noise gets dampened in part by use of an extruded aluminum engine cradle. There are two different four-wheel independent suspension systems, touring and sport. Standard features for Impala LS include driver and front passenger climate controls, cruise control with resume speed, overhead console with storage bin, and fog lamps. Impala also provides 140-plus safety attributes, including battery rundown protection. Mileage per gallon fuel ratings with the 3.8-liter V6 mated to the 4-speed automatic transmission: 20 city/30 highway. MSRP of Impala LS is $23,225.
