The all-new Camry, the fifth overhaul to this popular family sedan, gives the car a somewhat gangly exterior look. But its a design that improves aerodynamics (coefficient of drag goes from .30 to .284) and makes most people look twice. Camrys interior transformation presents a roomier environment loaded with plenty of places to stuff things in front of the gearshift is a deep tray divided into three zones, to the left of steering wheel (on the dash) is a pull-out storage tray, plus the center console provides covered cup holders and an armrest storage compartment. The re-designed instrument panel spotlights two gauges: tachometer (rpm) and speedometer, each with a small cutaway (one for oil temperature, one for fuel level). Three big dials (fan, air/heat, and air/heat mode) further convey an uncluttered presentation
Camry changes its 4-cylinder engine. The new 16-valve, 2.4-liter powerplant produces 157 horsepower, an increase of 21 horsepower over the previous engine. (Camry is also sold in a 3.0-lliter 192 horsepower V6 version.) Both engines transfer power to the front wheels via a new electronically controlled 3-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. A 5-speed manual transmission is available. Standard fare on all Camry models (LE, XLE, and SE) includes air conditioning, cruise control, outside temperature gauge, and full-size spare tire. Suggested retail price for LE Camry with 4-cylinder engine is $19,800, while fuel economy estimates are 23 city/32 highway.
