Pontiac Aztek looks like a film reel caught in the projector: it begs for attention. Like the Gremlin and Yugo before it, Aztek will be remembered by most people for its looks – or as some say, lack of looks. But what’s beyond the styling? Dubbed a sport recreation vehicle, Aztek’s gear extends beyond the interior boundaries. Standard on the GT model is a portable console/cooler that latches in place between the front seats. Just grab the console/cooler for an out-of-vehicle snack. Akin to having an already-packed suitcase, the front door trims on the GT models have ‘carry anywhere’ utility packs. Another neat feature is the tailgate’s side-by-side molded-in seat bottoms and cupholders. One other seating note: rear seats are removable.

Aztek receives its power from a 3.4-liter, 185 horsepower V6 engine mated to a four speed electronically controlled transmission. There’s a secondary gauge system via the head-up display (HUD). Aztek is the first General Motors vehicle with the latest version of HUD, where virtual images – such as vehicle speed – are projected onto the windshield. In stark contrast, Aztek’s sloping back arches give the vehicle too many blind spots. On the economy side, Aztek gets mileage estimates of 18 city/25 highway. Aztek is sold in front wheel drive and all wheel drive versions. MSRP of the four-door, all wheel drive Aztek GT model is $26,915.
