Toyota Land Cruiser is one hulk of an SUV. It’s definitely off-road savvy. But a week-long test drive of the 2024 Land Cruiser 1958 grade (a nod to the SUV’s 1958 U.S. introduction) shows this utility vehicle to be a smooth riding cruiser for daily drives. Following a stint as a 3-row SUV, Land Cruiser transitioned to a 2-row SUV in 2024. Toyota Land Cruiser is built off the same platform as Toyota’s Tundra and Tacoma pick-up trucks and the Sequoia SUV. Reigning as Toyota’s longest serving SUV, the Land Cruiser is capable of towing up to 6,000 pounds.
Land Cruiser’s sole powertrain is the i-FORCE MAX 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 326 horsepower and 465 torque. Engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission. An electric motor is positioned between the engine and the transmission. Land Cruiser’s off-road skills are enhanced by standard CRAWL (akin to off-road cruise control), Downhill Assist Control, and center and rear locking differentials. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 includes Road Sign Assist, which displays a stop, yield, or other detected road sign icon within the multi-information display. The tested 112.2-inch wheelbase 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 4WD hybrid has estimated mpg of 22 city, 25 highway and carries a base MSRP of $55,950.
