It’s a milestone year for the Toyota 4Runner in 2023 as the SUV turns 40. To celebrate, Toyota has a limited run (4,040 units in the U.S.) of the 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition. It’s offered in 3 exterior color choices: Midnight Black Metallic, Barcelona Red Metallic, and White. The big visual cue for the anniversary model is an attention-grabbing yellow/orange/red body graphic, and bronze-colored 17-inch alloy wheels. Interior anniversary touches include a bronze-colored cross-stitch shift knob and seat stitching. Based on the SR5 Platinum grade, the 4Runner 40th Anniversary model is sold in 4WD only.
Powering the special edition and all other trim grades of the 4Runner is a 4.0-liter 6-cylinder that pushes out 270 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 278 lb-ft of peak torque at 4400 rpm. The engine mates to a 5-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. Cargo space registers at 46-plus cubic feet with rear seat upright, 88-plus cubic feet with rear seat folded, and 9 cubic feet behind the optional third row seat. The week-long tested 109.8-inch wheelbase Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary model collects mpg of 16 city/19 highway and carries a base MSRP of $46,370.
