Since its debut in the 2010 model year, the all-electric Nissan LEAF has progressed to provide a longer driving range. The charging process is also faster with the now standard CHAdeMO quick charge port that’s offered for the base LEAF and the extended range LEAF PLUS in 2022. (With DC fast charging via the quick charge port, the extended range LEAF PLUS can reach an 80% charge in about 45 minutes.) In addition to the quick charge port joining the standard fare list, other changes for 2022 include a standard portable 240-volt charging cable and a lower starting MSRP ($31,670 for 2021 LEAF base S trim versus $27,400 for the same trim in 2022).
A week-long test drive of the Nissan LEAF SL PLUS showcased the front wheel drive car’s quick acceleration and silky smooth maneuverability. Putting the vehicle into reverse or drive is done via a floor console knob lever that you simply push or pull, then let go to engage. (Reverse is an upward movement, then a release of the knob lever.) The tested electric vehicle’s powertrain is an AC synchronous motor ( 214 horsepower/250 pounds-feet torque) paired with a 62 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The four-door hatchback provides more than 23 cubic feet of cargo space with rear seat upright and about 30 cubic feet with rear seat folded. Estimated driving range for the tested 2022 Nissan LEAF SL PLUS is 215 miles. That vehicle’s starting MSRP is $37,400.
