Off-roading gets the full treatment from Toyota. For anyone looking to transition from highway to non-highway driving, Tacoma TRD packages (including top-of-the-line TRD Pro) provide the gusto. A week-long test drive of the Tacoma TRD 4x4 in double cab configuration showcased exceptional exterior views via this midsize pickup’s high stance. During assorted on- and off-road treks, the truck’s Multi Terrain Monitor amped up the visuals. With a button-press, the driver can see via an 8-inch dashboard screen chosen view/s from side, front, and rear cameras.
The tested Tacoma TRD is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 producing 278 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 265 lb-ft of torque at 4600 rpm. Engine mates to a 6-speed automatic transmission. That Atkinson cycle engine, while not outrageously strong, readily provided on-demand strength for highway passing maneuvers. The TRD-tuned exhaust gives this pickup the sound-flare of a muscle car. That’s a nice compliment to the Tacoma TRD’s muscular attributes, which include a locking rear differential, crawl control, and hill start assist control. The tested Toyota Tacoma collects estimated mpg of 18 city/22 highway and carries a base MSRP of $37,280.
