BMW adds more shine to the 2020 X1, its sterling crossover utility vehicle, with new (optional) LED headlights and fog lights, and new tinted, LED taillights with L-shaped light bars. Other enhancements include a wider body stance; larger, 90 mm tailpipe (a 20 mm diameter gain); and bigger base navigation touchscreen (going from 6.5 to 8.8 inches). Since its debut in 2015, the X1 has showcased stellar performance attributes that nicely balance the engine and braking power with top-shelf ride and handling characteristics. During a week-long test drive, 40-plus mph wind gusts didn’t blow the X1 off-course. Steering inputs were essentially unchanged from the same drive -- minus the winds -- a day later.
The tested X1 was powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 228 horsepower between 5000-6000 rpm and 258 lbs-ft of torque from 1450 to 4500 rpm. Engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission that has the driver interacting with a new electronic gear selector switch. BMW X1 is offered in two trims: the sDrive 28i, and the xDrive 28i (which offers the xDrive all wheel drive system). Front and rear occupants are pampered with comfortable, supportive seats that provide 40.4 inches of front legroom and 37 inches of rear legroom. The tested 105.1-inch wheelbase BMW X1 xDrive 28i collects mpg of 23 city/31 highway and carries a MSRP of $37,200.
