Stellar fuel economy hasn’t been Jeep Wrangler’s calling card, but the status quo shakes up in 2020. Wrangler four door’s newest engine option is the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. But even the gasoline engines (2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder and 3.6-liter V6) undergo a transformation via mild- hybrid eTorque technology. For the 3.6-liter V6, eTorque is a Wrangler Sahara exclusive. (Wrangler offers four models: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.) The eTorque system essentially supplements torque and mildly improves fuel economy.
The test driven Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4 was powered by the 3.6-liter V6 with eTorque. Producing 285 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 260 lbs-ft of torque at 4800 rpm, the engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 118.4-inch wheelbase four-door Wrangler Sahara is also a cargo-hauling mecca, providing 31.7 cubic feet with rear seat upright and 72.4 cubic feet with rear seat folded. Another new-for-2020 feature: fourth-generation Uconnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Uconnect infotainment system offers choice of 7-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen with pinch/zoom capability. Tested Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4 collects estimated mpg of 19 city, 22 highway and carries a base MSRP of $38,645.
