The 2020 Ford Ranger can handle daily driving tasks as easily as a sedan but with considerably more functionality than a ground-hugging four-door. During a week-long test of the Ranger SuperCrew XLT 4x4 model, the midsize truck’s high-stance yielded impressive wide-angle exterior views. Whenever this driver needed an assist, the Ranger XLT’s standard safety technologies (including blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and trailer coverage, reverse sensing and rear view camera) were readily available. Ranger returned to Ford’s line-up in 2019 after an eight-year hiatus. Among the changes for the 2020 model year, Ranger offers the FX2 off-road package (including an electronic locking rear differential and front underbody guard) on 4x2-drive models.
Ford Ranger is powered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder with automatic start-stop technology. The engine unleashes 270 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 310 pounds-feet of torque at 3000 rpm.
A 10-speed automatic transmission mates to the powerplant. Ranger is offered in three trims (XL, XLT, Lariat), two cab choices (SuperCab and SuperCrew), and 4x2 or 4x4 configurations.The SuperCrew has a 5-foot truck bed, while the SuperCab has a 6-foot bed. The tested 126.8-inch wheelbase Ranger’s payload is a sturdy 1560 pounds, complimenting 7500 pounds of maximum towing. Ford Ranger XLT SuperCrew 4x4 collects estimated mpg of 20 city and 24 highway and carries a MSRP base price of $34,635.
