Toyota 4Runner’s new Venture Edition provides the 2020 midsize SUV with additional off-road spice. Wearing a Yakima Megawarrior roof rack (the steel framework for a 52-inch long/48-inch wide/6.5 inch tall storage tray) and fitted with low-range engine speed/braking CRAWL control, the 4Runner Venture is well-prepared for rock-infused, hilly terrain. But a week-long test drive -- dominated by a mix of smooth streets and pothole-riddled roads -- showed that this SUV easily handles daily driving missions. Based off the TRD Off-Road Premium model, the 4Runner Venture is dressed in gunmetal grey 17-inch TRD alloy wheels, roof rack cross bars, all-weather floor mats, and blackened door handles, side mirrors, and rear spoiler.
Powering the tested Toyota 4Runner Venture is a 4.0-liter 6-cylinder producing 270 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 278 pounds-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The engine mates to a 5-speed automatic transmission. New for 2020 4Runner features highlights: Toyota’s active safety sense (TSS-P) that includes lane departure alert/sway warning system, automatic high beams, and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection (standard on all trims); an 8-inch touchscreen (replacing a 6.1-inch touchscreen); and updated multimedia with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The tested 109.8-inch wheelbase Toyota 4Runner Venture with part-time 4x4 system collects estimated mpg of 16 city/19 highway and carries an MSRP of $44,285.
