Building muscle takes effort, but the payoff is pure performance. As a new offering for 2019, the M35i turns the X2 compact Sports Activity Coupe into a power-dynamo. The tested X2 M35i crackled with quick 0 to 60 mph acceleration, strong braking, and precise steering. With standard xDrive intelligent all wheel drive, the X2 M35i marks the first application of the M sport differential. This front axle-installed differential technology provides limited slip capabilities by reducing potential front wheel traction losses. The standard M Sport suspension provides stiffer spring and damping rates. Exterior cues on the X2 M35i include twin (100 mm diameter) tailpipes and a rear spoiler.

Powering the X2 M35i is a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 302 horsepower from 5000 to 6250 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque at 1750 to 4500 rpm. The 9.5:1 compression ratio engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission with center console shifter and steering wheel shifter paddles. X2 has 21.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 50.1 cubic feet with the back seat folded. M sports seats are offered in Magma Red Dakota leather with black accents, or Black Dakota leather. The test driven 105.1-inch wheelbase BMW X2 M35i collects estimated mpg of 23 city/29 highway and carries a base MSRP of $46,450.
